Maurie began his teaching career in 1978 and taught in a number of high schools in rural, regional and metropolitan NSW. For ten years, until 2011, Maurie was Principal of Keira High School in Wollongong.
Maurie was elected to the position of President of the NSW Teachers Federation in late 2011 and took up this position from the beginning of the 2012 school year. He was subsequently re-elected unopposed on three occasions, becoming the Federation’s longest serving President, before stepping down in 2020.
Whilst President of the NSW Teachers Federation, Maurie also served as Deputy Federal President of the Australian Education Union (AEU) from 2015-2020.
After leaving the Presidency, Maurie became the inaugural Director of the newly established Centre for Public Education Research (CPER).
